At its meeting tonight, the school board voted 5-2 to close Hoover School. Tuyet Dorau and Marla Swesey voted against the closure. Karla Cook, Jeff McGinness, Sally Hoelscher, Patti Fields, and Sarah Swisher voted for the closure. None of the board members articulated how the Hoover property would be used after the closure.
Because of an amendment offered by Sarah Swisher, the closing would occur no earlier than the 2017-18 school year. That means there will be at least two school board elections before any closure could occur. One of them is this September 10. Some of the candidates’ thoughts about the Hoover closure are here.
This site will continue. Please feel free to post your thoughts about the vote in the comments.
Unbelievable....how can a school board even discuss closing an elementary school without having a definitive plan?
ReplyDeleteHow does the majority of an elected board simply ignore the majority of it's constituents?
How does a school board list "maintain and create neighborhood schools" as one of there main tenants and then turn around and close one?
How do they justify space needs at City High without first building the third high school to determine true enrollment and growth needs or truly investigate other expansion alternatives?
fuck hoover
