PHIL HEMINGWAY FOR SCHOOL BOARD

Jane Collins extols Phil Hemingway's commitment to honest assessment of school district policies, upholding our community's values, and his ability to come up with practical solutions for our district's future in this letter to the editor in the August 26 Press-Citizen:

Phil Hemingway: Informed. Passionate. Practical.
I’m writing to urge people to vote for Phil Hemingway for ICCSD on Sept. 8.
Having attended nearly every regularly-scheduled ICCSD board meeting, as well as several redistricting meetings, over the course of the last six years, Hemingway is very well informed about the issues facing our district’s schools.
He has attended these meetings and stayed current with recent developments because he’s passionate — passionate about what constitutes the best possible educational experiences for the children of the ICCSD. He’s passionate about reinstating career and technical (industrial arts) programs back into the curricula, because he believes that the future of every student is important, not just those bound for college.
Hemingway is passionate about seeking teacher involvement; he values the input of those who have first-person experience in the classroom. He’s passionate about exhausting all possible options before resorting to actions with dire consequences. Finally, Hemingway is passionate enough to ask the occasional tough question —the uncomfortable question —the question, perhaps, that others are silently hoping he will not ask.
However, he’s also quick to offer up practical suggestions in response to those questions. His is a no-nonsense approach to decision-making, one that is both data-driven and level-headed, while understanding long-term implications of those decisions. He is, indeed, child-centered and future-focused.
Phil Hemingway is extremely qualified to be a member of the ICCSD, for he truly has his finger on the pulse of our communities and their needs.
